Fifty years from now, your wedding photographs will be among your most precious possessions, even if they are not very good. That is precisely why you want your wedding pictures to be as good as they can be.

A hundred years from now, your wedding album will be a treasured part of your family history.  You want beautiful photographs, for now and later.

In the long run, selecting an excellent wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make while planning your wedding.  Sure, your cousin, uncle, brother, sister or best friend can take great pictures when everything goes right,  A professional wedding photographer has the experience and equipment to get it right, even when conditions are challenging.  We do it for a living.  The equipment we use is significantly better and more expensive than that new digital camera your best friend just got, and we bring backup equipment.  A dropped camera with a broken lens takes no pictures.

So how you do you find the right photographer?  Look at the pictures and make sure you see multiple weddings at multiple locations so you know your photographer has the experience to handle the most challenging situations.  Also make sure you see complete weddings so you know the type of pictures you can expect from your wedding.  Imagine the kind of photographs you will want hanging on your wall.

Wedding photography is both science and art.  In the digital age, photography looks easy, but a lot of things can go wrong.  The science of photography is getting the right exposure in the camera, and then producing finished images that are the best they can be.

The art of photography is all about beautiful photographs of you, your friends, and family.  They may be traveling long distances to your wedding.  This is not an opportunity to be wasted.

And don't forget, your photographer is a guest at your wedding and will be a part of the festivities.  You want someone who makes you comfortable.  Ask your prospective photographers how they fit into your wedding day.  What will the photographer and assistants wear? You own your wedding and you have the right to choose the right photographer.

Please take a look at sample photographs from members of our association and contact several photographers so you can select the one that is right for you.

The following advice comes from Memorable Wedding
This is an independent site that offers wedding advice on many topics.

Making a Shortlist

Do make sure you start looking for a photographer as early as possible in your wedding preparations. Good snappers get booked up quickly and you don't want to spend your life reproaching yourself for not ringing sooner while looking at a dreadful bridal snapshot on your sideboard.

The final decision

A few things to consider before making up your mind;
  • If you've contacted a photographic agency, have you seen the portfolio of the person who'll be taking your pictures? Check this at your appointment and ask to view an album done by the photographer you're hiring.
  • Has the lensman already worked at your chosen venue? A good local snapper will probably have done several weddings at the most popular places and have a good idea of the best places and time to take certain shots.
  • Above all, do you feel comfortable with this person and trust them to be sympathetic to your needs? Anybody who makes you feel nervous or belittled will not be right for you, no matter how highly recommended they are.

Finally, bear in mind that the photos will be how you and other people remember the event years in the future. The best-planned and most elegant wedding in the world won't be an event to savour if the pictures don't do it justice. So be ruthless in your selection and ensure the only negatives on your wedding day are safely in the camera.
